What Can One Woman Do?

I went to a women’s seminar Saturday morning at First Baptist Church in Hickory. The 2 speakers were Haven Parrott and Rudy Fulbright executive director and treasurer of WMUNC.

The basic message is that as one woman faithfully following Christ you can make a difference.

Rudy gave practical tips of how Christian women should act and what they could be doing. We should have a spiritual kinship with each other. A servant attitude (more about service than the title.) We can use our money to help others, we can serve on boards of non-profits, go on mission trips, volunteer. A leader in church. A strong woman with a mothering spirit.

We can give all people dignity, love, respect and grace. And should willingly and gladly accept God’s call on our life.

Leslie Nease Gets Gutsy for God

I had listened to Leslie on WMIT for weeks and finally got to meet her today at the Catawba Valley Women’s Show. Most people would know her as the contestant in Survivor China who wouldn’t bow down to the Buddha statue and ended up getting kicked off in the 3rd episode.

She told the audience today that she could have just prayed to Jesus while she knelt there and no one else would have been the wiser, but likened it to kissing her husband as she went out of the house and then taking her wedding ring off. She needed to show her faith to people no matter what.

She shared that you don’t do this by judging others and you don’t beat them over the head with it. You just hold to your values and people will respect that.
Something else she said that I liked was “a saved life is a changed life.”

Remembering 9/11

The first thing I remember about that Tuesday was how beautiful it was. I'm in North Carolina and the sky was such an amazing blue and there was no humidity in the air.

I had books and Bibles spread all over the kitchen table as I was preparing a Sunday School lesson for the next Sunday when my husband called. He was changing planes in Atlanta on his way to Miami on a business trip. He said "Turn on the TV."

As soon as I saw it, my 17 years as a travel agent training kicked in and I told him to rent a car and drive home, because no one would be flying. He got the last rental car available and drove the four and a half hours home.

I taught a totally different lesson that next Sunday then planned - I held up the front page of our local newspaper, which said "America Prays"...and went from there.
